The Power of Multiplication

Reading statistics like 3.29 billion people with little access to the Gospel or over 7,400 unreached people groups can be overwhelming. The sheer enormity of "the Task Remaining" discourages people before they take their first step to get involved in missions.

Although strategies like church planting movements to reach an entire city or country can be helpful, it might be encouraging to break the big task into doable segments

What would happen if we simply obeyed Jesus’ Great Commission given in Matthew 28 to make disciples? What would result if, instead of feeling burdened to “reach” an entire people group, missionaries found just one or a handful of teachable disciples to equip who would, in turn, find just one or a handful of teachable disciples to equip?

The power of multiplication happens when we focus on a few, share the Gospel with and guide them to repent and believe, and then disciple those few believers to become “fishers of men” who go out and make other disciples. The multiplication cycle yields much fruit! Christ’s strategy included "doing life" with 12 disciples, knowing that investing in the few would reach the many. What if we did the same?

Hypothetically, if just one disciple made another disciple in one year, who made another disciple in one year, and so on, the entire world’s population could be reached with the Gospel in just 34 years! If that rapid multiplication could result from just one Christian's obedience to make one disciple per year, the impact of your entire small group or church doing the same thing would be huge!

If all 500 million people in the world who claim to be Christ's followers obeyed the commandment to make disciples, everyone on the planet would have access to the Gospel in a few years!

Of course, hypothetical scenarios don’t take into account the complexity of life. While we know that God wants all to come to repentance, we also know the reality that "the road is narrow and only few find it." However, it is encouraging to realize that mathematics validates the critical importance of reaching the few, rather than the multitude. Further, we know that the essential role of every believer is to share the Gospel.

Yes, the task remaining can be overwhelming, but breaking the task into a lifelong practice of discipling the few is doable. Imagine! Every person on earth could have a chance to respond to the Gospel in this generation if disciples became disciple makers.

In Mark 16:15, Jesus said to preach the Gospel to every creature. At GFM, our goal is to to faithfully do that by helping disciples and churches expand the Kingdom of God by making other disciples, one disciple at a time.
